What's New?
Two women with hands joined, both are standing on tiptoes on one leg with joined hands. They are on sand with a body of water behind them.

In spring 2024, I'll be looking at German body culture in the mid-twenties, with the help of a feature-length silent film: Wege zu Kraft und Schönheit (1925).

There is a LOT of material in this film, including footage of practitioners, performers, and athletes whose influence is still with us today. And it's all wrapped up in a narrative that is strikingly familiar, a hundred years after the film came out.

Over the course of four sessions, we'll look at clips from the film, contextualized with historical details, ideas from scholars, and some of my own archival research. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences as we take a deep dive into this fascinating source, together. The series will take place entirely on Zoom.

The talks will all be on Tuesday evenings at 7. I'll talk for about an hour, and there will be about half an hour of questions. My talk will be recorded, but the discussion won't.The FOLLOWING Tuesday afternoon, there will be an online conversation (45 minutes to an hour).  This gives those who prefer afternoons a chance to listen to the recording on their own and enter a discussion about the material. Anyone can join, even if you were at the evening session.
